// quick facts
  • //Made by Acid Wizard Studio, a three-person Polish team, over roughly five years with no publisher pressure on the schedule.
  • //The AI governing what approaches your shelter each night is dynamic, not scripted -- some nights are quiet, others aren't, and that unpredictability is what keeps the fear working across repeat sessions.
  • //Acid Wizard released the game on piracy platforms themselves before launch, with a note saying they'd rather people play it for free than not play it at all.
  • //Reviewed at 84 on Metacritic in 2017, then largely faded from cultural conversation -- it isn't a streamable, clip-friendly kind of horror, which likely contributed to it being underplayed.
  • //Set in an unspecified Soviet-adjacent Eastern European country, with folklore and environmental decay that don't map cleanly onto familiar Western horror tropes.

// overview

Darkwood is a top-down survival horror game where you play a Stranger stranded in a corrupted forest, unable to leave. By day you scavenge materials and interact with a cast of deeply unsettling survivors, none of whom can be straightforwardly trusted. By night you return to a shelter, board up windows and doors with whatever planks you've gathered, and wait out the dark while something tests the barricades. What approaches each night is dynamic rather than scripted, and the horror comes from accumulated atmosphere and genuine uncertainty rather than jump scares -- made by a three-person Polish studio over five years with no publisher pressure shaping the pace.

// the review

The best top-down survival horror game ever made, and one of the most underplayed games of the last decade. The night sections are some of the finest sequences in horror gaming -- not because of scripted events, but because of genuine uncertainty about what's outside. Play it with headphones, in the dark, and don't look anything up.
