Hollow Knight is a 2D action-platformer set in Hallownest, a vast, ruined underground insect kingdom that you explore in the classic Metroidvania structure: new abilities open up previously inaccessible areas, and the map is pieced together through exploration rather than handed to you. Combat is precise and unforgiving, there are no difficulty settings, and the lore is delivered almost entirely through environmental detail and cryptic NPC dialogue instead of cutscenes. It rewards curiosity and punishes carelessness in roughly equal measure, and the scale of what two people built on a AU$57,000 Kickstarter is still remarkable years later.
One of the greatest games ever made. The combat, exploration, lore, and atmosphere are all exceptional. Essential.
